Low-cost fitness program available to kids in the Twin Cities
Seven-week PHD program begins Jan. 5

Minneapolis, MN - Dec. 9, 2009 - Children between the ages of five and 10 are eligible for a fitness program being offered at the YMCA. The Physical, Healthy and Driven (PHD) childrens program is being offered at six YMCA locations in the Twin Cities. Children do not need to be a member of YMCA to participate. The seven-week program begins Jan. 5, 2010.

The program, sponsored by HealthPartners, shows children and their families how to improve health by becoming more physically active. Children meet twice a week for exercises and activities that focus on heart health, strength, coordination and flexibility.

Together, were helping kids get a head start on developing healthy habits that can last a lifetime, said HealthPartners Associate Medical Director, Beth Averbeck, M.D. The kids in the PHD program are getting fit and theyre having a fun time doing it. Its a win-win.

The program has four components:
  • Fitness Screening - Children will receive a fitness screening to measure blood pressure, height, weight, muscular strength, cardio fitness and flexibility.
  • Exercise - Creative games and activities get everyone up and moving, improving cardio fitness, strength and flexibility.
  • Nutrition - Visual aids help teach lessons about healthy and harmful foods.
  • Weekly Newsletter - Families will receive a newsletter with healthy recipes, family activity ideas and tips for healthier living.
What: Physical, Healthy and Driven program
When: Jan. 5 to Feb. 18 from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday nights
Where: YMCAs in Shoreview, White Bear Lake, Woodbury, Edina, and Andover and Coon Rapids
Cost: $50 for YMCA members, $66 for non-members. Parents can have a guest pass for free work outs during the program.
